Collingwood football boss Graham Wright thinks the Magpies will take an improved list into 2024 despite being “a little bit surprised” by Jack Ginnivan’s request to leave the club.

The premiership forward joined Hawthorn on the final day of the trade period after requesting a trade on Thursday morning, with Wright claiming the Pies had no knowledge of his desire to leave the club until the day before.

Wright said it was “harsh” to call Ginnivan dispensable to Collingwood’s side, but he said the inclusion of Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz and emerging talent already on the Magpies’ list meant it could be stronger than 2023’s premiership group.

He conceded the Schultz trade may have influenced Ginnivan’s decision to leave, but insisted the club had no desire to push the 20-year-old out the door.
