Perez started ninth on the grid but quickly made his way through the field after a chaotic start to find himself stuck in third behind Alonso.
The wily Spanish veteran used all of his experience to keep Perez at bay behind his Aston Martin for most of the race with some of the best driving seen from Alonso since the start of the season.
But after many attempts, Perez finally overtook Alonso on the second last lap to move into third.
