During a rain affected Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG between Australia and Pakistan, the TV broadcast panned to the home team’s balcony and spotted an unusual sight.

Steve Smith was standing next to a whiteboard featuring a list titled “Best Spinning All-rounders in history”.

Nine names feature on the tongue in cheeky list: Daniel Vettori, Sir Garfield Sobers, Ravindra Jadeja, Shakib Al Hasan, Ravi Ashwin, Travis Head, Richie Benaud, S. Patel and Axar Patel.

It’s certainly an eclectic group of international cricket legends and current players, and fans had a field day dissecting the list.

Cricket broadcaster Bharat Sundaresan tweeted: “Very interesting list of “spinning all-rounders” in that list on the white board in the Australian dressing room. Vettori, Sobers,

@ashwinravi99, Head, Benaud, Samit Patel?

Sports journalist Vince Rugari reshared the list, joking: “I love this s*** about cricket.”

Sobers and Benaud undoubtedly deserve their place as legendary spinning all-rounders, but others look out of place on the list of players who mostly have a handful of centuries and more than 200 Test wickets to their name.

Travis Head only has 11 Test wickets but has become a cult bowling hero after stealing Nathan Lyon’s 500th scalp in the first Test in Perth and also taking two wickets in the ODI World Cup semi-final.

The presence of Indian trio Ashwin, Jadeja, and Axar Patel is no surprise given the two veterans have terrorised Australia with bat and ball over the years and Axar helped break Australia’s 32-year winning streak at the Gabba.
