Olive oil, the gold of the kitchen, is struggling with a decline in quality and rising prices. A Tuscan farmer explains why the Mediterranean's liquid heritage is in crisis.

A test on olive oils has shown catastrophic results regarding quality and prices. t-online spoke to an olive oil producer about possible reasons and the challenges of growing olives.

Hardly any kitchen is missing it: olive oil. It is healthy, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is suitable for salads, sauces, low-temperature frying and much more. However, a current test by Stiftung Warentest has shown that the quality of commercially available olive oils has deteriorated significantly. At the same time, prices have risen.

t-online spoke to Kerstin Piceni about the possible reasons, the difficulties in growing olives and the taste of olive oil. Born in Germany, she runs a farm with her Italian husband Alessandro in the Pisan hills of Tuscany and produces organic wines and organic olive oil on the Spazzavento farm.
