Wangdue—The upcoming launch of two new cinema halls, one in Bajo, Wangdue, and another in Samdrupjongkhar, offers hope for Bhutan’s struggling film industry.

The Salang Tendrel (groundbreaking ceremony) for the Bajo cinema hall will take place today, while the ceremony for Samdrupjongkhar is scheduled for February 13.

The film industry has faced significant setbacks in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with declining film production, a shrinking talent pool, and many actors and filmmakers leaving the profession.

Further complicating these challenges is the absence of proper cinema halls, which has stunted growth. These new venues, however, may reignite optimism for the future of Bhutanese cinema.
