A patriotic ‘Buy Australian’ fervour emerged on ABC’s flagship Q and A political debate program on Monday night, with the domestic steel industry taking centre stage amid US President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on local producers.
South Coast Labour Council secretary Arthur Rorris asked the panel whether “buy Australian” should expand from consumer products like cheese and alcohol to include steel and aluminium, with state and federal governments potentially mandating the purchase of domestic steel products for large-scale projects.
NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said his government was actively looking to buy local steel and it presented a “win-win” option for governments.
