March 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. government agency that provides loans and help to millions of small businesses across America, the engine room of the country's economy, said on Friday it will eliminate over 40 percent of its staff.
The Small Business Administration announced it will eliminate about 2,700 jobs, as the Trump administration continues to purge the federal workforce and push to slash the size and cost of the U.S. government.

The SBA, which provides resources to small businesses across America, said in a statement that cutting its workforce of 6,500 people by 43% was part of reforms aimed at "ending the expansive social policy agenda of the prior Administration, eliminating non-essential roles, and returning to pre-pandemic staffing levels."
The cuts were announced on the same day President Donald Trump gave the agency more responsibility, telling reporters in the Oval Office the SBA would be taking over the federal student loan portfolio from the Department of Education, which the president wants to close.
