Shocking footage has emerged showing more than 50 inmates staging a mass prison break from a notorious Indonesian jail.

The video, filmed by bystanders outside the Kutacane Penitentiary in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh Province earlier this month, shows prisoners – some barefoot and clothed only in shorts – jumping over the front gate of the facility and absconding across a busy road as members of the public gamely try to catch them.

Other inmates also try to run across the roof of the building as tiles give way beneath their feet.

Some prisoners are thought to be still at large after breaking down the front doors of the prison.

The mass exodus reportedly happened around breakfast time, when prisoners were released from their cells to receive their food from the prison canteen.

The facility had a capacity of 100 prisoners but had 368 people in detention at the time of the mass escape, Indonesian police said.
