A “hungover” killer was sitting in an interview room at Surry Hills police station with two detectives poised to question him.

Earlier that day, on April 23, 2023, the 26-year-old was arrested at Sydney Airport trying to board a plane to Vietnam.

Le Nghia “Andy” Pham understood he was under arrest for the execution of Taha Sabbagh – a suburban father and limo chauffeur – the month before.

But he would tell the detectives he was “confused” about the questions they were asking him.

“Do you agree the people that I’ve mentioned – yourself, myself and Detective McGee are the only people in this room right now?” Detective Sergeant Kieran Glenzendorf asked.

“What sorry?” Pham, sporting a slicked back mullet, replied.

“Your rights were explained to you by the custody manager … do you want to exercise any of your rights now?” the detective later asked.

Pham said: “I don’t know what you mean by that.”

The now-convicted murderer, who a judge found was “gullible” to exploitation due to an intellectual disability, told police he did not want the interview to continue.

“I’m a bit confused. Because I just woke up from, like, a hangover,” he said.

“So I’m not that straight today.”
