Survey to assess ‘dilapidation and vacancy’ within Dublin’s North Georgian Core

An extensive survey of historic structures within Dublin’s North Georgian Core is currently under way, in a bid to preserve and rejuvenate the architectural heritage of the area.
This initiative is being conducted by the Department of Heritage, in collaboration with the Conservation Section of Dublin City Council.
It will encompass 560 buildings, stretching from Henrietta Street to North Circular Road, and from Blessington Street to Parnell Street.
The work aims to assess the extent of dilapidation, vacancy, and potential conservation needs.
Dublin’s North Georgian Core is a historically rich area that includes a series of 18th and early 19th-century streets and squares, developed by the Gardiner family and other estates.
It is a significant urban asset, stretching from the North Circular Road in the east to Dominick Street and Parnell Square in the west.
While it is one of the city’s most architecturally valuable regions, the area has suffered from neglect, illegal developments, and the degradation of its architectural heritage.
The North Georgian Core, a part of Dublin’s inner city known for its well-preserved Georgian architecture, includes the North Great George’s Street and Mountjoy Square Architectural Conservation Areas.
The survey is nearing completion, with initial findings expected in the coming months.
