Culture Date with Dublin 8 festival to coincide with anniversary of Daniel O’Connell’s birth

Culture Date with Dublin 8 is back for its seventh year and this year coincides with the 250th anniversary of Daniel O’Connell’s birth.

A special flagship concert is set to take place at Goldenbridge Cemetery on May 11 in honour of O’Connell, known as the Liberator for his campaigning which liberated Irish Catholics from Penal Laws in the early 1800s.

Curated by musician Fiach Moriarty, the event will feature reenactments of notable speeches by Daniel O’Connell and Frederick Douglass, performed by Jim Roche and Peter Smith.

Other contributions include spoken word artists Roxanna Nic Liam and John Cummins, historian Ultan Moran, and musicians Sive, renowned pipe and flute player Louise Mulcahy, along with a performance by the Foley Irish Dancing Academy.

The programme for the festival was officially unveiled at a ceremony in St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Speaking at the launch, Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain, said: “It is my honour to launch the programme for this year’s Culture Date with Dublin 8 festival, which celebrates the Dublin 8 area as one of Ireland’s leading cultural destinations.

“From ancient history to modern art, Dublin 8 is home to some of Ireland’s most culturally significant and diverse heritage sites and museums.
