The international expert in the field of food security, Dr. Fadel Al -Zoubi, believes that the suspension of American aid through the USAID (USAID) has greatly affected vital sectors such as health, education and water, which increases pressure on national resources, especially as it hosts about 1.3 million Syrian refugees, which increases economic burdens and affects the Kingdom's ability to achieve food security.
Al -Zoubi said that the government launched a strategy to enhance food security by improving local production, reducing food waste, and enhancing regional and international cooperation in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Jordan has launched a program to transform the agricultural and diet system towards more sustainability and steadfastness.
He added that this program focuses on developing agricultural value chains and increasing the comprehensiveness of women, youth and refugees, and the Food Security Council is implementing the 2025-2027 action plan that includes the establishment of a monitoring and evaluation system for the performance and impact of the transformation in diets, in addition to enhancing the government's capabilities to repeat these operations in sectors.
And that Jordan seeks to enhance cooperation with the Gulf states and international financing institutions to attract investments and support agricultural and water infrastructure.
He believed that the options available to Jordan are to enhance local production by investing in modern agricultural technologies such as hydropower and smart agriculture climatic, improving water resources management to reduce losses and increase irrigation efficiency, diversify financing sources and enhance partnerships with other donor countries and international institutions, as well as attracting private investments to support the agricultural sector, and involve women, youth and refugees in agricultural and food projects to enhance Productivity and achieve social justice.
He also proposed the establishment of a regional center for humanitarian response in cooperation with the World Food Program, so that it plays an important role in enhancing the Kingdom's ability to face emergency crises.
Evaluation of the effect
For his part, former Minister of Agriculture Saeed Al-Masry said that stopping financing for emergency food aid threatens the World Food Program programs on which thousands of refugees and host communities depend, as this step coincides with Jordan's efforts to implement its national food security strategy (2021-2030), which requires an accurate assessment of the impact and exploring alternative options.
Al -Masry added that the direct impact on the Syrian refugees will be to reduce food classes, exacerbate malnutrition, and high levels of school leakage.
He added: "As for the impact on host societies, it will increase the pressure on the infrastructure, and generate a possible societal friction due to the competition for limited resources."
He continued: "While the total economic impact will be the additional pressure on the state budget, and the financing challenges in front of continuing humanitarian support."
He said that Jordan's strategic options should be represented
