Warning cyclone off Aussie coast will strengthen into a Category 3

Tropical Cyclone Errol formed about 475km north-north-west of Broome at about 8pm (10pm AEDT) on Tuesday.

Western Australians living on the north-west coast are being warned to prepare for a tropical cyclone which is set to strengthen in the next 48 hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the category one storm is likely to intensify to a category three as it travels further west before making a U-turn.  

'Tropical Cyclone Errol is moving west over open waters well off the northwest Kimberley coast,' BoM said. 

'It is expected to continue moving west and intensify during Wednesday. 

'From Thursday Errol is expected to turn southeast towards the coast and peak in intensity as a severe tropical cyclone.'

The cyclone's outer winds are set to impact a 400km stretch of coast from just north of Broome to north of Kuri Bay by Friday.
