Relations between Türkiye and Israel are witnessing tension in the Syrian arena, and this is why talks were held in Azerbaijan between the two parties with the aim of establishing a "prevention of engagement mechanism".
Turkish security officials spoke to me about the details of these ongoing talks with Israel, which I put below in the form of a question and answer.
1- What is technically intended to prevent engagement?
It is a system that is based on the exchange of information between two countries, and aims to prevent damage between the military elements of each party in a specific area. This concept is one of the accepted military terms, and is applied in many countries of the world.
2- How does the engagement mechanism work?
The two parties inform each other, without going into accurate details, with their movements or military operations, specifying their positions or coordinates. The other side refrains from entering these areas or approaching these coordinates, which prevents the emergence of an engagement environment.
3- Does the exchange of military information constitute a security vulnerability?
The mechanism is mainly based on mutual trust. Without declaring this commitment to trust and joint decision -making, this mechanism cannot be created at all.
4- Have Turkey ever used this mechanism with other countries?
Yes, Türkiye has already used it in Syria and Iraq. In Syria, the mechanism of preventing the engagement was established east of the Euphrates River between Türkiye and the United States, and in the West between Türkiye and Russia.
