Sligo GAA confirm Markievicz Park will close for a year to facilitate pitch regeneration with pitch in ‘unstable condition’

Sligo GAA’s home ground, Markievicz park, will be closed for at least a year to facilitate a regeneration of the playing surface with the pitch in an ‘unstable condition’ during the early stages of this year’s national league.
Pictures show the condition of the surface, with Sligo GAA bringing in specialist expert advisors to assist earlier this year, with the predominance of Meadowgrass leading to issues with the condition of the pitch.
The ground will be unavailable for use until mid-2026, and it has not yet been confirmed where Sligo will play during the course of the works.
A statement from Sligo GAA said: “Sligo GAA this week confirmed that its main ground at Markievicz Park is to close from the beginning of next week (April 28) to facilitate a significant regeneration of the playing surface.
“The decision to start this work now follows a thorough analysis and assessment carried out earlier this year by specialist expert advisors. This was undertaken due to the unstable condition of the pitch as seen in the early stages of this year’s national league.
