First national convention on education to be established in 30 years

Education minister Helen McEntee is to establish a national convention on education, touching on all aspects of teaching and pupil well-being.
It is understood that the convention will be established in the next school year and last for a full 12 months.
“This will be the largest national conversation on education in the history of the State,” said a source close to the minister.
More than 30 years have passed since the last national convention on education, which ushered in some major improvements.
“Given this, and the changes that have taken place in our education system since, the minister believes it is timely that work should commence on the next convention,” the source added.

Ms McEntee is pledging that the results from the convention will inform her work on a plan for the long-term future of our education system, tailoring it better for the needs of today’s employers while not losing sight of the development of youth learning, appreciation and developmental skills for their own sake.
