Controlled explosion carried out at scene of ongoing security alert in Belfast

It’s understood that the alert is ongoing in an area close to Belfast Castle on the Antrim Road.

Shortly after 9:30am, two controlled explosions could be heard across north Belfast.

Belfast Castle has also been closed as Ammunition Technical Officers deal with the incident.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, a resident said: “Police were on the pathway up here last night, we were out walking our dog at the time, they were everywhere, but I'm not sure if it's related.

"This place is usually quiet, we get some bother from kids at the weekend, but nothing like this....
