Gardaí upgrade probe into fire that ripped through Longford home to arson investigation

Gardaí investigating the circumstances behind a fire that ripped through a house in county Longford a year ago have confirmed how those inquiries are now part of an “ongoing criminal investigation”.

The Irish Independent broke details of how the blaze effectively gutted the two storey property on the outskirts of Granard during the early hours of April 15 last year.

Gardaí and local fire crews attended the scene but were unable to prevent the fire from spreading through the property.

Gardaí have confirmed a fire that engulfed a two storey home in Granard, Co Longford just over 12 months ago is now part of an "ongoing criminal investigation".

Its roof caved in as a result of the blaze with its front door and several windows having blown out while significant smoke damage was caused to its interior.

The Irish Independent attended the scene in the days following the fire and took a number of photographs which illustrated the devastation which had been left behind.
